Why Are Consumer Electronics Companies Using Microdisplays?

Road crashes cause more than 1.3 million human deaths each year, says the World Health Organization (WHO). Sadly, most of the instances are avoidable, as they are a result of over-speeding, talking on the mobile while driving, and rash driving, all of which are human errors. Alarmed at the high number of road accidents, several countries have mandated the usage of advanced driver-assistance (ADAS) systems in vehicles to aid drivers and reduce road accident deaths.

This is to be a key reason, as per P&S Intelligence, for the growth of the microdisplay market value from $1.0 billion in 2019 to $4.0 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of 13.4% between 2020 and 2030. This will essentially be driven by the integration of heads-up displays (HUDs) in ADAS to display critical information about the vehicle and journey, including speed, route, fuel/battery charge level, tire pressure, approaching traffic signals, and pedestrian density.

HUDs would be mounted right in front of the windshield, behind the steering, so the driver doesn’t have to take the eye off the road every time they want to look at the ADAS data. Since HUDs will need to be small, so as to not cover too much of the windshield and obstruct the driver’s view of the road, they will be integrated with microdisplays, which are small displays that offer a high resolution and pixel density.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) of the U.S. has already mandated some level of ADAS in trucks, which has started driving the demand for HUDs and, in turn, for microdisplays. Another key application area of such devices is near-to-eye (NTE) devices, which, as the name suggests, are positioned close to the viewers’ eyes. They include the electronic viewfinders (EVF) of digital cameras and augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR) head-mounted displays (HMDs).

With the increasing tech-savviness and rising disposable income in developing countries, the demand for interactive and realistic videogames is surging, which is propelling the sales of AR/VR headsets. Moreover, these headsets are being used by corporate houses, retail establishments, manufacturing companies, military departments, and healthcare facilities.
